2010 RIDER OF THE YEAR

QUARTER HORSE NEWS: Lloyd Cox ended 2010 by winning the NCHA Futurity Open in December with a 3-year-old stallion and placing fifth aboard a 3-year-old mare to earn $310,614 and finish as 2010’s top-earning Open rider.
Cox finished 2010 with $475,141 in Open rider earnings, not counting stallion incentive programs and novice horse earnings, to earn the second Equi-Stat Award of his career.
Until winning the first NCHA Futurity Open title of his career in mid-December aboard One Time Royalty and finishing fifth with Tazs Dreamgirl, Cox had earned about $150,000 in the first 11 months of what he termed a good but not great year. “The end of the year kind of made it all happen,” Cox said. “That’s the way to finish, if you can, but it’s hard to do.”
Winning the second Equi-Stat Award of his career is a big deal, Cox said, because of his respect for the many top trainers and showmen he competes with throughout the season. “It’s not something you go into the year thinking you will win, but it’s a very nice thing to be able to say you’ve done. That’s for sure,” Cox said.
